The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.
This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.
His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's decision was the chance of the former president's transfer to embassies near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The legal document emphasizes that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Trump, leading him to implement a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will experience a detention review on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also requested that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.
The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, Brasília.
The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
