Approximately fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Police say they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then found multiple other marked vehicles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say initial examinations suggest the liquid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; investigators are currently not cognizant of any harm in association with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials announced they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the public for information.
A high-ranking political figure commented the vandalism made him stunned and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist attack in 2020," he stated on online, recalling the killing of nine people by a assailant aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
