EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
