The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
