Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People purchasing these drugs should be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural support.
